The console version of Sonic Mania is available from today, Wednesday August 16th, 2017. And there’s a new animated trailer to celebrate Sonic Mania release if you haven’t already pre-ordered it or picked it up in store.
We’ve been following the game since it appeared at EGX 2016, and a review will be on the way shortly. It’s definitely something eagerly anticipated, as it’s been a while since a truly classic 2D Sonic game has appeared in a full console release.
The blue Sega mascot led the way for Mega Drive with the first 1991 title featruing the iconic Green Hill Zone which still offers a time-trial challenge today. And I can remember the excitement of Sonic Twosday in 1992, which added Miles ‘Tails’ Prower and the spin dash.
The combination of 2D side-scrolling and pseudo-3D special stages was incredibly exciting at the time. And remains more enjoyable than the later 3D Sonic titles. So the fact that it’s a return to the 90’s style with lead programmer Christian Whitehead, who has previously ported Sonic CD and the first two Sonic games to mobile and last gen consoles is another reason to be interested.
The good news is that it’s here now. So you can play as Sonic, Tails and Knuckles as you take on re-imagined classic levels and all-new Zones feauting surprises and bosses working for the evil Dr Eggman. Plus there’s Sonic’s new drop dash, Tails flight and Knuckles climbing abilities.
There is an update for PC fans. Although the console versions (PS4, Xbox One and Switch) are available, the PC edition will now launch on August 29th, 2017. Those who already purchased the US only Sonic Mania PC Collector’s Edition or pre-ordered via an official retailer before August 15th will have Sonci the Hedgehog 1 unlocked as a reward for waiting, and if you already own it, you can either trade it or send it to a friend, which is something at least.
Expect more details and a full review shortly.
