Solo: A Star Wars Story is out in May 2018. So you’d expect the promotion for the film, starring Alden Ehrenreich, to be ramping up during Super Bowl LII. And Lucasfilm didn’t disappoint, with a shorter 45 second glimpse into the film to tease a longer trailer due on Monday, February 5th.
The Super Bowl teaser doesn’t show much of Solo himself, beyond what appears to be a short job interview with the Empire. It may be that Solo is applying to become the best pilot in the galaxy, as the clip reveals, or it might be part of a grander scheme. But it’s likely to form part of his introduction to Chewbacca as in some of the non-canon Star Wars films revealed he became friends with the Wookiee by saving him from punishment in the Imperial Academy.
Also in the clip are Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian in a warm fur coat, Emilia Clarke as the so-far unknown character Emilia Clarke, an electronic take on the traditional John Williams score and the traditional Star Wars images of Star Destroyers, TIE fighters, droids and blasters.
Plus, as many have noticed, the Millenium Falcon is not only much newer in the teaser. It’s also much cleaner.
We’ve only got until May 25th, 2018 to wait and find out whether Han Solo is just bad at housekeeping duties. And to see whether director Ron Howard has managed to craft something memorable after taking over from previous directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.
