Frankie Sinatra is the first new release by Australian electronic music group The Avalanches since their debut album in 2000. The group had been teasing new material in late May with a Youtube video entitled “Since They Left Us”, and on June 2nd they tweeted a link to the Frankie Sinatra music video.
Frankie Sinatra and Since I Left You
Frankie Sinatra follows their first album “Since I Left You” – an album that found a lot of fans but was hard to pin a genre or style to. It’s clearly comfortable in the dance and electronic section of most music stores, but the tracks in the album cover all kinds of themes and tempos, from impressive record scratching and sampling on “Frontier Psychiatrist”, through the upbeat dance melodies found in “Live at Dominoes”, to the gorgeous title track that has a warmth and feelgood vibe that’s hard not to love. In addition to the debut album they released mix albums such as “When I Met You” and “At Last Alone”, but the wait for a new standalone release has been a long one. The teaser video in May featured quotes speculating over the release of the second album – soundtracked by clips of old and new material from the group – and closed with the words “Coming soon. Hopefully.”
Frankie Sinatra and Wildflower
Frankie Sinatra came a lot sooner than I expected – pretty much a week and a half after that teaser video – and is characterised by a quirky funfair melody and simple but memorable lyrics. It’s not quite the kind of thing I expected after Since I Left You, but to be honest that album was so diverse that I wasn’t sure what to expect. Shortly after the news of Frankie Sinatra they announced that the next album – Wildflower – would be released on July 8th. Needless to say, many fans of Since I Left You will be counting down the days to the new album; until then, we can enjoy their new release below.
