New Story-Led Psychological Thriller ‘The Shattering’

7th May 2019 By Dan Thornton Leave a Comment

The Shattering is a new psychological thriller with an unusual look. Developed by the terribly-named Polish company SuperSexySoftware, the pristine white aesthetic isn’t unique (Superhot being one popular example). But it does change the feel of a first-person thriller, particularly with the specific use of colour in various places.

A tidy desk, but are those blue Post-It notes important in The Shattering?

You play in first-person as John Evans, as you navigate his own dream by putting together fragments of the past and the present. So you’ll figure out more about the history of the character, guided by the voice of the ‘Doctor’ over a total of five acts.

A videogame character navigating his own dream and guided by a voice in his head? The Shattering has some clear narrative influences…

So a protagonist being led by a voice through his own dreams isn’t particularly original. But it does look good, and the team at SuperSexySoftware have put five years into The Shattering so far.

That time must have been largely spent on creating the admittedly attractive environments. And no modern narrative game is complete without an original score to heighten the emotions. The Shattering is no different.

We probably should have bought more balloons…

The Shattering is due out in Quarter 4 of 2019 for PC via Steam. And it’s published by Deck13 Spotlight.

No price has been announced, but those with early access have noted how the game handles self-reflection and mental health as key topics. Which is a bit difference to most horror games. There’s no combat, but your decisions will have an effect on which game ending you might reach at the end.

There’s still a while before The Shattering becomes available to download, but in the meantime you can see if it’s the sort of game that you might fancy trying by checking out the latest teaser trailer.

So what do you think? Are you a fan of the modern move to narrative, story-driven games? And will this start a trend towards more austere, white aesthetics to take us away from the darkness usually associated with horror and thriller games?
