The Cornshed Sisters have a new album out, and a selection of tour dates to support the release. And if you enjoy four-part folk harmonies, then both are well worth checking out.
The Northern based group previously released Tell Tales in 2012, which had a more traditional feel despite also including a cover of Dresden by les Cox Sportfis in which they made the song their own. But Honey and Tar has more obvious modern pop influences and a wider range of instruments to compliment the mix of sweet vocals and sometimes cutting lyrics.
The quartet of Jennie Brewis, Cath Stephens, Liz Corney and Marie Nixon have a markedly different style and outlook to many of the wave of new folk-inspired bands making waves at the moment. Mainly due to the depth of their experiences, which includes Nixon’s time as a member of Kenickie.
The album is out now on Memphis Industries, and the balance of bittersweet pop with the delicate harmonies is captured pretty well in the first single, The Message.
