Rainbow Skies is the new turn-based fantasy RPG follow-up title to Rainbow Moon. It’s out for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita on June 26th, 2018. And if you’re not familiar with the original game or following news of the latest release, then this Rainbow Skies gameplay video with developer commentary should help.

Rainbow Moon was originally released as a digital title, covering the PlayStation 3 in 2012, and with further releases including a limited physical edition for the PlayStation 4 and Vita. German developers SideQuest Studios and publisher Eastasiasoft Ltd are following a similar approach with Rainbow Skies, which will feature Cross-Buy and Cross-Save support across all of the three PlayStation platforms, and comes with a 10% discount for PlayStation Plus subscribers for the first two weeks of release. This time, there are physical editions from the off, including Limited Editions with a soundtrack CD.

Sony owning fans of tactical RPGs should certainly check out Rainbow Skies, as it’s inspired by familiar fan favourites in the genre. You play the part of Damion, who faces his final examination as a monster tamer. That’s an important profession in a home town constantly under attack by monsters. But a terrible hangover causes Damion to not only mess up his exams, but also destroy the existing monster compound and find himself caught between two rival super powers, long with two other friends and fellow young heroes.

Rainbow Skies certainly seems to tick all the RPG boxes. There’s a big, colourful world filled with non-player characters. You can fight in turn-based battles, including skills and combo attacks. There are monsters to be bred and levelled up as party members. You can upgrade characters, weapons, equipment and battle skills. Plus there are hidden treasures and collectibles, an ‘almost endless’ amount of side quests, and mini games including a turn-based fishing game.

It’s probably not going to convert new players to the charms of turn-based roleplaying games. But if you are already a fan of the genre, then Rainbow Skies certainly seems to cover off everything you’d expect from this type of title. That includes the art and design, game mechanics, plot and structure.

Rainbow Skies is out on June 26th, 2018. If you want the physical edition for the PS Vita or PS4,  or the Limited Editions, then the only UK retailer we’ve found so far is Play Asia.
