Making an Overwatch Themed Cake

7th June 2018 By Dan Thornton Leave a Comment

I’ve always loved videogames. But aside from the 1980 arcade game Burger Time and the Sims series, food only generally appears as a way to recover health.  We mentioned some notable exceptions in our recommendation for the Geeky Chef cook books. And now one of my favourite games has got involved as developers Blizzard release a video on making an Overwatch themed cake.

Making an Overwatch Themed Cake

The drip cake features the Overwatch logo, which will be familiar to fans of the game. And dripping icing topped with rock candy. The reason for the cake is that Overwatch has been incredibly popular, and it’s currently celebrating the second anniversary of the game being released. So there have been special events, a video in which two of the characters bake a birthday cake, and a competition for fans to win prizes by submitting photos of their own creations.

OK, it might not be quite enough to win a round of Bake Off. But it’s reasonably quick and simple, and should be great for any Overwatch fan. Including me.

The process is relatively simple, but it’s worth noting that underneat the icing is a chocolate cake with buttercream layers. So there’s a bit of effort involved if you’re going to faithfully recreate it. But the only time you need to be particularly accurate with the decorations will be the Overwatch logo. Thankfully, it’s a pretty simple design.

Rock candy (also known as sugar candy) isn’t always easy to find in UK shops. But thankfully, it’s really easy and fun to make at home. All you really need is sugar and water. Plus some suitable food colouring, which you’ll be able to use again for the icing on top as well.

Making an Overwatch Themed Cake: Ingredients:

  • Water: 3 and 1/2 Cups
  • Cocoa Power: 3 and 1/2 Cups

  • Vanilla Extract: 2 TBSP
  • All-Purpose Flour: 6 and 1/2 Cups

Making an Overwatch Themed Cake: Video

Here we go – obviously the video has been sped up a little, and you’ll need to make a note of when to mix ingredients and the baking/refridgeration times before starting.

But doesn’t it look cool? And it’ll be worth it if you have young (or in my case, young and old) Overwatch fans celebrating a birthday etc in the near future.
