Super Nintendo World is a new Mario and Nintendo-themed area which is being built as part of Universal Studios Japan. It’s planned to be open in time for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, and to be followed by similar Nintendo worlds in Hollywood and Orlando. Building is now underway, as shown by the wonderfully surreal Super Nintendo World Groundbeaking Ceremony video below.
The teaser trailer is pretty short, but looks interesting. Obviously it features a certain Italian plumber pretty prominently.
All nice CG and all. But it gets much, much better.
Surreal Super Nintendo World Groundbeaking Ceremony
So this is a serious business event. It’s the start of construction work on a major licensing deal and money maker for both Nintendo and Universal. So you’d expect important executives in suits to explain why it’s going to be so good.
You might not expect Shigeru Miyamoto to be accompanied by Universal Studios Japan CEO J.L Bonnier and Universal Parks and Resorts vice chairman Mark Woodbury in matching oversize Mario hats and gloves… Or for it to kick off with a dancing Mario.
There’s not a whole lot of details about what to expect. But Woodbury did reveal one major attraction will be based around Mario Kart. Which makes sense.
Now you’ll just have to be patient. It might be 3 years before we see the completed Super Nintento World, but theme park fans the world over will be trying to sneak past the yapping piranha plants to capture any information they can.
And at least you’ll have the vision of three grown businessmen cosplaying Mario to tide you over…
