The Flame in the Flood Released for Nintendo Switch

13th October 2017 By Dan Thornton Leave a Comment

The Nintendo Switch is definitely benefitting from a growing library of games. And that seems to be increasing fairly quickly now. There’s another eShop addition with The Flame in the Flood released for Nintendo Switch. Which is good, if you fancy a roguelike survival adventure.

The Flame in the Flood Released For Nintendo Switch

There’s a good chance you might have heard of The Flame in the Flood. It was originally released for PC, Mac and Xbox One in early 2016. And the PlayStation 4 version arrived in January 2017. It was anticipated pre-release following a successul crowdfunding effort, and because developers The Molasses Flood include people who had previously worked on BioShock, Halo 2 and Rock Band. Plus the soundtrack was created by American singer-songwriter Chuck Regan.

So it had all the ingredients for an interesting game. And the critical response backed it up. Generally it’s been well-praised as something different, unique and absorbing, despite a few flaws.

If you haven’t already tried it, The Flame in the Flood follows the journey of a young girl named Scout. In a post-apocalyptic, post-societal type world after a mass flood, the game starts with natural beauty and a great winding river. But obviously you then encounter threats from wild animals, the natural elements and other dangers.

There’s a big sense of risk from the permanent deaths in the game, only alleviated by checkpoint restarts. But you do have a canine companion named Aesop who can sense danger and fetch supplies. So the challenge is to feed and clothe yourself, craft equipment and traps, and upgrade your raft.

The Flame in the Flood obviously takes some inspiration from American literature and film with the mix of the great river journey and Southern folk/country original soundtrack.

“The Flame In The Flood has always been about the journey rather than destination,” said Forrest Dowling, Lead Designer of The Flame In The Flood. “That’s partly why we’re so pleased to bring the game to the Nintendo Switch, a console that allows you to play on the go. This version of the game looks and plays great docked or in the palm of your hands.”

So now you can potentially play a game about floating downriver on a makeshift raft while you’re actually floating downriver on a makeshift raft. Although we’d probably advise against it for safety reasons. Maybe hire a proper boat and someone to pilot it while you play…
