Innovative Arma 3 Laws of War DLC Revealed

12th August 2017 By Dan Thornton Leave a Comment

Normally new downloadable content for an FPS game involves some new maps and weapons. Sometimes it may have a new game mode or playlist. But I can’t remember a time when it introduced the basic principles of International Humanitarian Law, as with the innovative Arma 3 Laws of War DLC revealed here.

So the unusual new DLC does include some new vehicles and weapons. But the centrepiece is that you will now have to take in account the real laws which govern warfare. And a new faction, the International Development and Aid Project (IDAP), which is a non-government organisation which responds to humanitarian disasters. So roles include Explosive Ordnance Disposal specialists.

It’s an interesting move to simulate the real legal aspect of warfare in a game. And it’s another indication how FPS games are evolving from pure action to a more thoughtful take on what happens.

“With amazing support from our teams in the Czech Republic and Thailand, this marks the first project for our small new studio in Amsterdam, which – together with the perhaps unusual DLC theme – makes it extra special for us. The idea for the Laws of War package was very much inspired by our relationship with the International Committee of the Red Cross. This began with a presentation from the ICRC to the Arma 3 development team on the topic of International Humanitarian Law a few years ago. Since then, we’ve always been interested in thinking of ways to better incorporate this vital yet also very complex aspect of war into the game. With this DLC, we hope to offer a balanced introduction to the laws of war, and their implications on the way that war is conducted,” said Joris-Jan van’T Land, who has been the project lead on the DLC.

Arma 3 Laws of War Content:

So there’s a variety of new content included in the new DLC, including:
The International Development and Aid Project (IDAP) faction, with new clothing, gear, tools, supplies and other items.
The ‘Remnants of War’ mini-campaign, in which IDAP explose specialist Nathan MacDade is tasked with finding and deactivating mines after the war in the Republic of Altis and Stratis has ended, and uncovers events in the town of Oreokastro from throughout the timeline of the conflict
Van vehicle – IDAP uses a variety of versions of the new van, with specific cargo, transport and ambulance variations available and more than 20 custom liveries.
Utility and Demining Drone. The new drone can move cargo or supplies and a special variant also helps with removing mines.
APERS Mine Dispenser. A new weapon system which can deny access to areas during and long after a battle.
Vests, bags, headgear and facewear – including safety vests, messenger bags, hard hats, press helmets, safety goggles and more.
Additional Content includes other items including time trial challenges for the new van and drone, a paramedic outfit and a training mine.

The release of the new DLC in early September will also coincide with a major free Arma 3 platform update which will add new content and features for all players. These will include: refined cluster strikes, the simulation of Unexploded Ordnance (UXO), the ability to drop (custom) leaflets from the sky, two new Showcase scenarios (Showcase Laws of War and Faction Showcase IDAP), a wide variety of emergency and medical supplies such as food bags, water bottle packages, blankets, stretchers, and IV bags, plus decorative objects such as shelter tents and new furniture, extra Steam Achievements, and much more.

You can pre-order the Arma 3 Laws of War DLC now via Steam and the Bohemia Store. As well as saving 10% on the normal price of £8.99 / £11.99 / €9.99, a portion of every direct sale of the pack will be donated to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). So you’ll be helping the survivors of real conflicts as well as the virtual ones.
