It’s always fun to find something a little different when browsing vintage kitchens online. When you think of metal storage cabinets, you probably think of a garage or workshop. But this 1950s House Proud Metal Larder Unit / Meat Safe Locker shows how popular metal was in mid 20th Century kitchens. It’s not the biggest unit you can find, or in mint condition. But larger, restored examples tend to be pretty expensive.

Considering it’s all original and around 70 years old, some rust and wear is expected. And also helps to make it more affordable. The door handle has some great vintage style, and the hinges still work perfectly well. Although possibly not the most stylish ways to hande the door.

But with the louvres on the front, and the original mesh etc inside, it’s certainly something a bit different.

Personally, I really like it. It’s like having a small industrial meat locker tucked in the corner of your kitchen. And I do think metal units are great for a vintage style that looks a bit different. As the seller suggests, it could be kept as is, or repainted in a new colour. Personally, I’d be tempted to try and restore it fairly sympathetically, and just clean it up, reduce the rust and wear, and then protect it for the future as a drinks cabinet or general storage.
