Joseph Joseph Dimple Ice Cream Scoop Review

31st May 2018 By Dan Thornton Leave a Comment

I still can’t justify investing in a Joseph Joseph chopping board set quite yet. But I have scratched that itch in a slightly different way. As you’ll now discover with my Joseph Joseph Dimple Ice Cream Scoop review.

As an ice cream addict, I’d survived without a dedicated scooping implement for a surprisingly long time. To be fair, Ben & Jerry’s or Haagen Dazs tubs are single servings anyway, aren’t they? But I had to admit it was time to rediscover things like portion control, and other brands of frozen desserts. So I started browsing for ice cream scoops, and found most were surprisingly expensive. Even supermarket own brands are around £6 or so, and it’s hard to find a cheap, basic wooden handle with a essentially a thick spoon on the end.

So the fact that the Joseph Joseph Dimple is £10 whether bought direct or via your normal retailer means you’re not really paying a premium.

So why buy it?

Well, it looks quite funky, like all the Joseph Joseph range.

The Dimple finish on the scoop claims to make it easier to actually release ice cream into a bowl

There’s the interesting drip catcher idea.

And finally, and probably best – it can stand upright on a flat base. No more trying to balance it on the edge of a bowl etc, or watching it roll towards the edge of the kitchen surface. And then onto the floor.

So did the reality live up to my expectations of a £10 ice cream scoop?

Joseph Joseph Dimple Ice Cream Scoop Review

First impressions are that it looks pretty cool. Although in hindsight, the two-tone Green colour is probably the more attractive one. The silicone handle is nice and comfy, and the Dimple is apparently BPA free. So that’s all good so far.

Does it release ice cream more easily? It makes a little difference to have the pockets all across the scoop to avoid creating a vacuum when carving out your favourite ice cream. It’s not going to mean nothing cold ever sticks due to the fact you’re handling something sticky and cold, but the old trick of hot running water will always also help.

And the flat base is as useful as I hoped. It’s so much easier to be able to stand the Joseph Joseph Dimple upright between serving up pudding. Especially if I’m going between more than one flavour to create something more fun or interesting. Or indeed serving lactose-free ice cream alternatives, as well as the traditional dairy-based treat.

When upright, the drip catching collar does work. The only flaw I’ve found is that it catches everything, but then obviously it all runs out as soon as you tilt the scoop again. Which is obviously down to liquid viscosity and gravity, so hard to solve with a relatively inexpensive piece of kitchenware. But you do need to carry the Joseph Joseph Dimple upright to somewhere and tip it over safely to remove drips if you don’t want the melted ice cream going back into the tub or on your kitchen counter.

Looking at reviews online, some people have mentioned the potential for corrosion. So far I’ve seen no sign of anything after a month or so. But I’d always say that it’s worth washing and drying anything you want to remain in good condition, as even expensive kitchen cutlery will corrode eventually if it’s always left damp.

So overall, my Joseph Joseph Dimple Ice Cream Scoop review is a recommendation for a stylish, practical, and improved way to serve your frozen delights with less mess.

Wanted! Joseph Joseph Bamboo Wood Index Chopping Board Set

1st May 2018 By Dan Thornton Leave a Comment

The more time I spend in the kitchen with Liz, the more I appreciate the difference quality kit can make to cooking. And more importantly, eating what you’ve cooked. You don’t have to spend an enormous amount if you shop around. But it’s definitely worthwhile if you want to create better food more easily. For instance, this Joseph Joseph Bamboo Wood Index Chopping Board Set. It’s available direct from them, for £70.

Now, you can pick up a pack of plastic boards for £5 from a supermarket, or an oak carving board from somewhere like Tesco for £25. And there’s nothing wrong with that. But buying three of them, and you’re suddenly looking at £75. And with cheap plastic ones, you’ll end up with them scratched pretty quickly. I’ve always found that they start retaining bits of food fairly soon, and that’s never a good thing. The Joseph Joseph ones look like they’ll work a lot better, and have been around for 10 years, but the holder does make them look a little like office filing. And I see enough of that when I’m working.

So £70 doesn’t seem so bad for three bamboo boards. Plus the holder. And I really like the fact it has a tab on each board for the food type – raw meat, cooked food or veggies. Even with colour-coded plastic examples, I always forget which board is meant to be used for which food type. It’s easy to forget if red was for raw or cooked meat? Tough, nautral bamboo just looks and feels way better. Give me a nice chopping board and a reasonably decent knife and suddely I feel like a chef. Which means I actually take a bit more time and effort to chop things properly.

And the metal stand is a nice touch. It’s got non-slip feet and means I’m not desperately trying to wedge multiple boards into a kitchen drawer. Or demolishing the cupboard trying to get the things back out. It means the bamboo chopping boards are actually close at hand, and easy to grab midway through cooking. Plus they aren’t taking up a mass of space which could be better used for other things. The more I think about it, the more the Joseph Joseph Bamboo Wood Index Chopping Board Set actually sounds like a bargain.

Plus the brand was set up by twin brothers Antony and Richard in the UK back in 2003. So it’s nice to support a business from the UK. Obviously Liz already knew all about their range and recommended them, but I’m still learning which brands to look out for. So I’m now starting to build my wishlist for kitchen cookware for 2018, and the Joseph Joseph Bamboo Wood Index Chopping Board Set is at the top of the list so far.
